SMALL CHANGE: No parking allowed at the end of Gilroy Hot Springs anymore. This tacks on an extra 2 miles (4mi round trip) to the hike thats already a strenuous 5ish mile hike. So I Biked from Hunting Hollow Entrance to the end of the road where I locked up my bike to the bridge and hiked the rest of the way.
Henry W. Coe is somewhat formed like a huge Bowl. So none of my APRS transmissions were ever received even at the top of the peak, which was surprising to me. Perhaps something may have been wrong with my setup, but 1 was received prior to leaving home.
There is to be NO parking at the end of this road anymore, but these people were hanging out under the bridge. The trail start is to the right, just beyond the truck.
About 1/4 of the hike is covered by trees. The rest is in the brutal sun and very strenuous uphill battle. I suggest starting this hike early in the morning or bring at least 1 gallon of water. I brought 1/2 gallon and was out of water just when I started to decent.
Almost all of my SOTA activations have been on solar. Although it is a lot of extra weight (bringing the pack to 35lbs) the pain is worth it to me. It dose produce noticeable noise on the HF bands but I could easily make out most stations heard.
At the bottom of the sunspot cycle and a spotless sun I was still able to work South Dakota, Arizona, Oregon and Oklahoma all on 20m CW.
